Our Historical Society program for March will be on Sunday, April 21, starting at 2:00 PM at the McGuire Room at the Traverse Area District Library.This month's topic is "Early Nursing in the Grand Traverse Region."

​

This presentation will describe the history of the nursing profession in our area. The bulk of the lecture will focus on the Traverse City Asylum Training School for Nurses which opened in 1906. The name was changed to the Traverse City State Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1911. Why was this school opened? Who were its founders? Who were the students who attended the school? Did it benefit the community in any way? Why did the school close in 1947? These are a few of the questions that will be answered. The effects of the political and health concerns of the times will also be discussed.

Virginia LeClaire grew up in a military family and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing of Detroit in 1964. She subsequently attended the University of Michigan where she received BSN and MS degrees. She was employed in the Breast Oncology Program at the University until her retirement in 2006. At that time, she returned to her beloved Grand Traverse Region where she had spent many delightful summers as a child at Long Lake. She is proudly descended from four Traverse City pioneer families.
