Julius Steinberg, the Bargain Giver: From Peddler to Opera House Proprietor and Beyond.

Stepping onto the S.S. Lincoln on February 2, 1869, Suwalki native, Judel Szteynberg set off on a journey to establish financial stability for his wife and son to join him in the United States. From peddler to Traverse City local and business leader, Judel Szteynberg became Julius Steinberg, whose family, life, and times provides an exceptional window into the everyday life of a Jewish business person, father, and community member. Based on Julius Steinberg Papers Collection in the TADL Local History Collection, this presentation investigates the Steinberg family and business over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While the legacy of the Steinberg family is largely missing from the built environment of contemporary Front Street in Traverse City, a study of Steinberg’s life reveals that the historical impact of Julius Steinberg and his family can be found elsewhere.
